Distinctive Prepasted Wallpapers & Murals – Installation

Product Description

These quality Wallcoverings are PVC free, environmentally & fire rated compliant and are child safe. They have paste embedded on the reverse side (no paste to buy and apply) – just soak in a water tray for 20 – 30 seconds (rolled up with the paste side out) and then fold paste side to paste side and leave for 3 – 4 minutes allowing the paste to activate and remain moist. Then hang butt joining the seams. Weight 280 GSM.

The printed surface has a lightly textured matte sheen, is washable, lightfast and when it comes time to re-decorate the Wallcovering is strippable. Just spray water onto the wallcovering surface, allowing the adhesive to relax for easier removal. The roll of printed panels is 24” wide. If your total wall width is not exactly divisible by 24”, the last panel will have a narrower printed area to complete the full width of your dimensions.

This material has good hiding capabilities over problem, cracked walls and paneling. First install Distinctive Wall Liner. See Wall Liner Installation Instructions.

Ideal for homes, including bathrooms and kitchens and light commercial installations.

1
Unwrap and roll out.

  • A separate sheet will provide a colored picture of your Wallcovering plus hanging instructions and the tools you will need.
  • Make sure that you have all the panels for your Wallcovering and ensure that they will cover the entire area per the measurements you supplied when ordering.
  • Place the panels in order ready to install.
  • Lay panels flat for a few hours allowing them to uncurl.

2
Clean wall.

  • Wall should be smooth and clean. Sand any rough areas if necessary.
  • Prime if it has not been previously painted.
  • Turn off any electrical power outlets and remove plates.

3
Roll up.

  • Roll up the first panel, paste side out and submerge in a wallpaper tray filled with cold water for 20-30 seconds.
  • Remove from water and fold paste side to paste side and let sit for 3 – 4 minutes.
  • This allows the paste to fully activate.

4
Begin installation.

  • Begin your installation from the left wall corner and if it is not plumb (most are not!), draw a plumb line 23” out from the corner.  (1” less than the width of your Wallcovering panel.)
  • Using a spirit level or plumb line mark a straight line down the wall to act as a right side guide when applying the first panel.
  • As you hang the first panel line up the right edge to this line.
  • The left edge can be pushed tight into the corner with a papering tool/scraper and trimmed with a knife.
  • It is important that this first panel is perfectly plumb!  You can repeat the plumb lines across the wall at 24” spaces for additional guidance if necessary.
smoothing

5
Install first panel.

  • Open the folded wallcovering, first at the top aligning the right edge with the plumb line and the top just above the ceiling line.
  • Use your papering brush or tool to smooth out the wallcovering starting at the ceiling and working down the wall from the middle out to the edges. This will remove any surplus water and air bubbles.
  • Be sure to keep the papering tool clean at all times.
  • Use a damp sponge to finish the application wiping away any remaining water residue.
  • Note that the lower edge will fall below the level of your baseboard – per the height measurement you provided when ordering.

Install remaining panels.

  • As you install the second and remaining panels.
  • Slide each left hand edge to butt join and match the design.
  • Do not overlap the seams.
  • Smooth the wallcovering surface as described in paragraph 5.
trim-icon

7
Triming.

  • Trimming top and bottom and around any framework.
  • Ensure that the wallcovering is pushed tight into the corners and edges with your papering tool before trimming the excess.
  • Steel rules or spatulas are ideal for neat and straight cuts.
  • Replace your knife blade often – a dull blade may tear the paper.

8
Repeat.

  • Repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7 to install your remaining panels.
  • If you need to reposition a strip, spray additional water on the wall as necessary.

Installing Wallcoverings to more than one wall in a room.

Murals most generally are applied to just one feature wall in a room. Wallpapers on the other hand are often applied to more walls, sometimes all four. In such cases you will need to compensate for the possibility that the other corners may not be plumb. Here is the best way to hang your wallcovering in these inside corners:

measure

1
Measure.

  • Measure distance from the edge of the last panel on your first wall to the corner at the top, middle and bottom.
  • Then add 1/2″ to the largest measurement and cut the next panel of wallcovering lengthwise to that size. (The portion you cut off will be used next.)
smoothing

2
Hang.

  • Hang panel and smooth it into the corner allowing the extra 1/2″ to overlap onto the adjoining wall.
  • Trim off excess at ceiling and baseboard.
measure

3
Measure.

  • Measure the width of your “cut-off” panel and snap a plumb line that same distance from the corner on the un-papered wall.
smoothing

4
Hang.

  • Hang panel to the line overlapping the 1/2″. Continue around all walls using this procedure.

Removal When You Re-Decorate

spray

1
Spray.

  • Spray the surface of the wallcovering with water, and let sit for about 10 minutes allowing the water based adhesive to relax for easy removal.
remove

2
Pull.

  • Beginning at the top pull each panel of the wallcovering back on itself at an angle until it is completely removed.
  • If the printed surface separates from the paper backing, spray more water and continue peeling it away from the wall, in some cases a scraper may be necessary.

3
Paste Residue.

  • Use a damp sponge to remove any paste residue once removal is completed.

4
Priming the wall

  • One of the advantages in priming the wall before you install wallcovering is that it makes removal much easier.
